John Abraham Feels Bollywood Is Walking A Tight Rope With Its Recent Releases; says, “I don’t think we are secular”

John Abraham cited The Kashmir Files as an example of a successful film, highlighting the growing influence of propaganda in Bollywood. The actor, who will soon appear in The Diplomat, expressed his concerns about the current state of Hindi cinema, noting that it seems less secular than in the past and suggesting that the industry is navigating a “tightrope.”

John Abraham Worries Hindi Cinema Seems Less Secular

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, John Abraham shared his thoughts on contemporary Hindi films and also discussed Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava. “I don’t think we are as secular as we once were, even as individuals in cinema,” he remarked. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a secular narrative in India, saying, “I feel we are walking a very tightrope now. Are we producing propaganda films? I don’t know.”

John continued, “We are creating films that resonate. People might label movies like The Kashmir Files as propaganda… But as a regular consumer of cinema, I found it impactful.” He further elaborated, “The story resonated with me. I’m not here to judge if it’s propaganda; what matters is whether it strikes a chord with me. And in that regard, I credit the director.”

John Abraham praises Chhaava

He also praised the success of Chhaava, stating, “The latest film doing well is Chhaava, and I texted Vicky to congratulate him. I was thrilled to hear about it. I also reached out to Dinoo because I’m grateful that the film is bringing audiences back to theatres. We should celebrate these successes and appreciate the filmmakers who are effecting change in the industry.” Lastly, he expressed his desire to be part of that positive shift in filmmaking, stating, “I wish and hope to be one of those making a difference.”
